I’m Jim. Most folks call me Bear.
I’ve worn a few hats. Roofer. Christian clown minister. General contractor. Plant manager. Volunteer youth sports director. Husband. Father. Grandfather. Honorary co-chairman of The Mankind Project. Ambassador to the Spirit of Harmonious Cooperation. A guy who hugs strangers at the grocery store.
When I was young, I never thought I’d see thirty. I had a near-death experience as an infant, a childhood with more trauma than a kid should carry, and I was an angry man for a long time. In June of 1999, I went through my New Warrior Training Adventure with The Mankind Project — and that weekend changed my life. If it hadn’t, I’m honest with myself: I’d either be in prison for a long time, or I’d be gone.
I’m sixty-six now. I love myself, which wasn’t always true. I’ve buried a daughter, two brothers, more cousins than I can name, and I’ve learned to embrace grief instead of fight it. I started making art on 3×5 cards during Zoom meetings — just doodling, playing, letting the colors talk. Turns out, people wanted them. So I keep making them.
I’m not your guy if you’re looking for perfect, polished art. But if you want something made with love, by hand, with a little bit of mess and a whole lot of soul — pull up a chair.
